On the High Plains, clearing is more about old windbreaks, wire and junk than forest. We keep the trees still doing their job and save the topsoil for the finished grade.
Clearing around Cheyenne is different from wooded country. Most lots are grassland, so clearing means stripping sod and topsoil, pulling old fence lines, removing junk and debris left on old homesteads, and taking out dead or overgrown shelterbelt trees. We save the topsoil in a pile for the final grade, because good topsoil is scarce on the High Plains and costly to bring back in.
Shelterbelts of cottonwood, Russian olive, juniper and pine protect many farm and ranch homes from wind and snow. When rows die out or block a new building site, we take out the trees that need to go and leave the ones that still do their job. Stumps come out under buildings, drives and trenches, and elsewhere they are ground or cut low. Brush is chipped, piled for approved burning or hauled.
Near Fort Collins and Laramie, and along creek bottoms, clearing can bring in more trees, willows and wetland areas. Work in a stream, a wetland or a floodplain can need permits, and cities have their own rules for trees in public right-of-way. We look at the maps and the property lines for your parcel before any clearing near water. Trees we are told to keep get a fence around their roots.
Land clearing in Cheyenne: common questions
Do you save the topsoil when clearing?
Yes. We strip and stockpile it so it can be spread back on the finished grade.
Can you remove a dead shelterbelt?
Yes. We pull dead trees and stumps from old windbreaks and can leave healthy rows in place.
Can brush be burned on my land?
Open burning has local rules and fire restrictions in dry, windy weather. Check with the county or the fire district before planning a burn.
